Shaving
From www.leather-dictionary.com - The Leather Dictionary
The leather has to get the desired thickness in the tannery. First the skin is split. Later, it is shaved on the shaving machine by spirally arranged knives from the flesh side to the appropriate thickness. The fibres are cut to an even thickness. The splitting machine does the first part and the shaving machine helps achieve the desired thickness of the leather.
The shaved leather fibres are then pressed and undergo a waste treatment process e.g. incineration. In some cases, shaved leather fibres are also used to produce bonded leather.
