Chagrin is a leather of the back of horses, camels, donkey, mules and other animals. Characteristic for this leather is the artificial grain. Chagrin leather is embossed by grains, which are pressed into the still damp leather. Nowadays, embossing is made with metal tools.

Chagrin is used for bridle, sabre sheaths or book covers.

By "real chagrin" is meant the finely granulated skin of the sharks and the characteristic surface of the stingray leather.
