Soft leather

Soft leather is an unprotected generic name for all particularly soft and supple leather qualities of calfskin and goatskin and the skins of exotic animals. For example eel leather is a particularly soft leather. Napa leather is synonymous with particularly soft leather. Soft leather can be porous, but also surface coloured. When manufacturing soft leather, the tanner has to make sure that the leather is as soft as possible. Usually smooth leather is referred to as soft leather, but also nubuck and suede can be called soft leather.

Since the term is also used for belt leather which require a certain strength in order not be too labile, it is always necessary to check whether the leather has a particular softness. In principle, an object marked "soft leather" should be softer than the usual softness of such leather objects.
