What is aircraft leather?
Leather used in aircraft must meet strict flammability and fire retardancy of leather (flame resistance, smoke density, etc.) standards. The leather must be treated during tanning in order to meet these requirements. Such leathers are also used for helicopters.
To save fuel, aircraft leather is made extra light (light weight).
Aircraft leather is subject to strict controls and must be certified for aviation. Not every leather manufacturer can supply the aircraft industry. Suppliers of aircraft leather must meet and check the requirements for the aircraft industry. Organizations such as www.easa.europa.eu are responsible for approvals and certifications.
