Piñatex - pineapple leather

Piñatex is a surface material made from the cellulose fibers of the pineapple leaves and is mainly processed for bags and shoes. But there are also showpieces in the furniture and vehicle sectors.

The surface is reminiscent of coarse-grained smooth leather. In Germany, the material was presented for the first time at fashion fairs in 2014. The cellulose fibers of the pineapple leaves are a waste product of the pineapple plantations, just as the leather is a waste product of the meat production.

In the online world, the term “pineapple leather” or “vegan leather” appears. Piñatex is also referred to as "vegan leather" because of its suede-like look and feel, but this is a misnomer because it is not made of animal skin material and therefore cannot be called "leather". Like other leather alternatives, Piñatex is not a purely ecological product, but is a mix of natural fibers and synthetic materials.
