Cabretta leather is a common name in the USA for South American sheep hair (not wool fur) and used for gloves and shoe uppers. However, it is also made from skins of similar hairy sheep from other countries, e.g. from East and West Africa.
The name actually derives from the Spanish and Portuguese word for goat (Cabra), even though the term is used for sheep leather.
Cabretta is processed hairless as smooth leather. It is chrome-tanned, fine-grained and as soft as leather from young goats.
Cabretta leather is often used for golf gloves.
