Thick leather is leather with a thickness of more than 1.4 millimetres. Normal upholstery leather generally has a thickness of only 0.9 to 1.2 millimetres. Thickness of leather cannot be determined exactly and it can vary up to 20 percent due to the heterogeneous skin texture. Bull hides often have a deep grain structure, which also makes accurate thickness measurements more difficult. Standardised measuring instruments are used to define uniform measuring methods.
