Écrasé leather (French écrasé = squeezed) is usually made from hides of goats or calves. The skin shrinks during tanning, causing any scars to become more pronounced. They are completely flattened in the finish. The indentations appear as bright veins on the leather surface. This creates a multi-coloured design.
